TOP100 Languedoc Wine Competition: the Best Red IGP Trophee and the  Best IGP Pays d’OC Trophee were awarded by Tim Atkin on Wednesday 5th June 2013 at the Oxo Tower in London.

This year marked the launch of the Top100 Languedoc-Roussillon wine competition designed to highlight the great variety and quality of the wines available from this region, and find the 100 best amongst them.

The competition took place on Thursday 25th of April in London and featured 562 wines. The wines were tasted and assessed by a panel of 15 judges and chaired by Tim Atkin Master of Wine.

The results were revealed at the Oxo Tower last Wednesday and we are delighted to announce that twelve wines from Domaines Paul Mas were selected amongst the Top100 with 2 of them winning a trophee. This is a great achievement which shows Domaines Paul Mas’ commitment to becoming a major player in the Languedoc.

In addition, the most anticipated results of the Decanter Wine Awards, the International Wine & Spirit Competition and the International Wine Challenge have been announced!

This year, Domaines Paul Mas won a total of 15 Silver Medals and 32 Bronze Medal through these three competitions and with over 30 gold medals won since January 2013, Domaines Paul Mas’ owner Jean-Claude Mas highlights: “These results show the growing interest in Languedoc wines and the recognition among professionals of the quality and variety our wines can achieve”.

Decanter World Wine Awards:

This year, Domaines Paul Mas won 14 Bronze Medal, one Silver Medal and 19 commended Medals at the Decanter World Wine Awards!

The Decanter World Wine Awards announced a record-breaking year of entries with 14,362 wines tasted by the world’s best palates. A judging line-up of 219 wine experts from 27 countries, including 75 Masters of Wine and 13 Masters Sommelier gathered in London in April to taste the wines. 

International Wine & Spirit Competition:

Domaines Paul Mas won 9 Silver Medals and 8 Bronze Medals including. Founded in 1969, the IWSC judges wines through 2 rigorous stages: a professional blind tasting followed by a detailed chemical and microbiological analysis. More than 300 wine specialists travel from all around the world to judge the wines. The judges are a mixture of Masters of Wine, winemakers, trade specialists, journalists and sommeliers.

International Wine Challenge:

Domaines Paul Mas won 5 Silver Medals, 10 Bronze Medals and 15 commended Medals. In its 30th year, the International Wine Challenge is accepted as the world’s finest and most meticulously judged competition. The IWC assesses every wine ‘blind’ and judges each for its faithfulness to style, region and vintage.  Each medal winning wine is tasted on at least three separate occasions by a minimum of 10 different judges.  Awards include medals (Gold, Silver, Bronze) and Commended awards.

We will be presenting our portfolio on the Sud de France pavilion at the LIWF 2013 and Jean-Claude Mas will be with us. As well as showcasing the new vintages of key brands such as Arrogant Frog, Domaine Astruc and Paul Mas Estate, Château Paul Mas wines from the prestige estates and cru appellations such as Pézenas and Grès de Montpellier will be open for tasting. Prima Perla, a new range of Blanquette and Crémant de Limoux will also be open for sampling.
Since the beginning of 2013, the wines of Domaines Paul Mas have won 50 awards. Mas des Tannes Reserve Blanc 2012 and Paul Mas Estate Carignan 2012 have just won a Trophy each in the first ‘Languedoc-Roussillon Sud de France Top 100 wine competition,’ chaired by Tim Atkin MW.

TOP 5 HIGHLIGHTS ON DOMAINES PAUL MAS STAND E10/3 AT LIWF 2013


1. THE CÔTÉ MAS RANGE
A classic Mediterranean white blend, a rich fruity red, an elegant, dry rosé and an innovative Picpoul Frizzante make up the Côté Mas range, all packaged with striking Art Deco labels in the vibrant colours of the Languedoc.

2. MAS DE MAS PINOT BLANC 2012
The Alsatian stalwart Pinot Blanc can also produce a delicate, pear-scented wine with a crisp, mineral core in the Languedoc. The grapes for Mas de Mas Pinot Blanc 2012 were picked from a tiny parcel in a sandy-soiled vineyard that was, until the end of the 19th Century, an ‘étang’ much like the shallow, oyster-laden lagoons down the road at Thau. This wine recently picked up a Gold Medal at the Anivins Vins de France competition.

3. CHÂTEAU PAUL MAS BLANC BELLUGUETTE 2012
A blend of 40% Vermentino, 30% Roussanne, 20% Grenache and 10% Viognier, this new white wine from Château Paul Mas is made from fruit picked from the Belluguette vineyard. Planted on limey, gravelly soil and cooled by daily sea breezes, Belluguette is the perfect location for production of white Mediterranean varieties, achieving depth of flavour and crisp acidity.

4. CHÂTEAU CRÈS RICARDS ‘STÉCIA’ 2011
From the exciting appellation of Terrasses du Larzac, this wine is a blend of 60% Syrah, 25% Grenache and 15% Carignan. 75% of the wine has spent 8 months is oak barrels prior to its release. Acquired by Domaines Paul Mas in 2010 the Crès Ricards estate bears all the hallmarks of a great terroir; red rocky soils, hot sunny days and cold nights.

5. MAS DES TANNES RÉSERVE ROUGE 2011
The organic Mas des Tannes vineyard covers 30 hectares on the Nicole Estate near Montagnac. For Domaines Paul Mas, sustainable viticulture and care for the environment is not simply an option but a necessity. Light tractors are used on the vineyard to prevent soil compaction. A special ‘intercep’ plough is used to weed around each vine instead of using herbicide. Wild flowers and grasses are grown between the rows of vines to promote biodiversity throughout the vineyard.
